Tired of looking at skyscrapers? Then Merdeka Square will provide you a respite from the burgeoning development of Kuala Lumpur with its wide open spaces and giant green field. Merdeka means ‘independence’ in Malay language. The historical Merdeka Square houses the tallest flagpole in the world at 95 meters that proudly displays the Malaysian ‘Jalur Gemilang’. There is also a victorian fountain at the other end of the field which is worth checking out for your photo collection.
The giant green field which is right beside the Royal Selangor Club was once a cricket pitch during colonial times. Here was also where the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag was raised on the very first time the country achieved independence at the stroke of midnight on 31st August 1957. Nowadays, Merdeka Square is the official venue of the annual Merdeka Parade celebrations.

The most convenient way to get to the Merdeka Square via public transport is by getting on any of the three LRT train lines that runs through the Masjid Jamek station. Walk towards Jamek Mosque from the station and proceed to the corner and towards Merdeka Square.
