Bukit Tabur lies on the world’s longest quartz ridge and is nicknamed ‘The Dragon’s Backbone’. It’s one of the more challenging hikes as the climb to the peak involves rock climbing too. The climb takes around 3 to 4 hours up to a height of about 500 metres, where you’ll be overlooking the Kuala Lumpur skyline, Klang Gate Dam and the surrounding Melawati Hills.
There are two major trails, West and East. If you want to witness amazing scenery or you are still new to hiking, get on the West trail for your adventure. The East trail has generally been dubbed as more difficult but they both involve rock climbing over steep formations of at least 10m high. Therefore, caution has to be exercised and it is best for fit hikers. If you explore further along the route, you can also head to the Far East trail which can be quite an experience as well.

- Gloves are a necessity as there is rock climbing involved and you might cut your hands on the sharp rocks.
- If you get lost or end up being separated from your group, stay in the same spot until help arrives.
- Be extra careful during the rock climbing section as small mishaps can cause serious injuries.

- This trail is not suitable for children to hike.
- There is a new requirement, all trekkers/hikers must obtained their trekking permit from the Forestry Department in Cheras. This department is only open on weekday. No permit will be issued at entrance of Bukit Tabur. Trekking is only allow on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and public holiday from 8.30 a.m. to 5p.m. You can try call them at 03-9075 2885
- Be sure to pack lightly so you will stay comfortable throughout your hike.
- Do not go on the hike if it has rained the night before as this makes the soil soft and it is easier to slip and fall. Be sure to check the weather before your trip.
- There is no official opening hours, but the safest to hike is during daylight or in the morning so you get to catch the sunrise.
