What to expect?
What to expect?
Mangrove forests are abundant along the coasts of Langkawi Island. Most tour operators bring eager kayakers to paddle along the waterways and mangroves of the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park which has a large variety of impressive flora and fauna.
A typical kayak paddling route brings you from a fish farm into narrow and small mangrove waterways, occasionally visiting small and hidden caves along the way. In the mangroves you can witness the diversity of the ecosystem in Langkawi as you will see many species of monkeys, snakes and birds.
Also a sight to look out for is limestone formations and fossils that are millions of years old! At the end of your trip, you will return to the fish farm where you can enjoy a hearty locally-sourced lunch and witness a mass fish feeding event.

Safety tips
Safety tips
- Listen inevitably to the rules and procedures given by your kayak instructor during the safety briefing before boarding the kayak.
- When you’re on the water, always keep your life jacket on and make sure it is securely fastened. If you were not given a life jacket, insist for it.
- Keep a safe distance from wildlife when you take pictures for both your safety and the animal’s safety.
- You’ll usually be accompanied by a lead kayak that guides you through the waterways and a safety kayak in the back, remember to identify the safety kayak so that you can ask for help in case of an emergency.
Insiders’ tips
Insiders’ tips
- Take your time and ask your kayak leader or guide about the forest, they’ll be happy to answer your queries.
- A little rain is a good thing as it allows the birds to come out from the forest and it’s easier to spot them.
- Dave’s Adventure Tours is a recommended tour company for the mangrove forest kayaking tour.
- There are no facilities available while you’re on the kayaking journey and there is limited storage space in the kayak. Bring only what you need for the few hours you are kayaking with you.
