Located at Jalan Pengkalan Kapal in Alor Setar, the Tanjung Chali used to be a harbour where locals access to travel between villages and then it also became a prominent trading hub. Today, the historical site is retained by turning it into a beautiful park area surrounded by lush gardens and a few other attractions located strategically nearby. Also, the park is suitable for a romantic walk in the evening or for a morning jog.
Other than going for a romantic walk in the evening or plan for a morning jog, Tanjung Chali is also famous for its watchtower. Favoured by tourists and local photographers, you can walk up the stairs of Menara Tanjung Chali and see the whole area surrounding the park from its small deck. It might not be the tallest point but it’s worth of pictures, especially during sunset.
Your visit to Tanjung Chali is incomplete without experiencing street food at a prominent Chinese hawker center, Sudut Selera Tanjung Chali or known as Hai Tao Ki among the locals. Less than 1km is another historical sight, the Balai Nobat or Nobat Tower. The nearby Pekan Cina or Pekan Melayu also makes a great stop for some heritage and vintage shopping

If you are from Alor Setar city centre, Tanjung Chali is probably a walking distance from you. Hail a taxi at an affordable rate or use a ride-sharing app. If you are driving, you can just get here using the GPS and just park at any available spaces nearby. If you wish to explore the heritage trails and other nearby attractions in Tanjung Chali, it is better to just visit them by foot so parking will not be a hassle.

- Tanjung Chali area can be a bit busy during business days due to its location nearby trading shops. If you are walking at this area, please be mindful on the cars, motorcycles and other vehicles passing by.
- This area can be pretty difficult to find a parking spot and be mindful with your parking because you don’t want to end up paying fine to local authority should you miss park your vehicle at non-designated area. Check for available signs for parking spaces.
- The best time to visit Tanjung Chali and experience the liveliness would be in the morning when you can see those shops retained throughout several generations, opened in the streets.
- If you wish to see more views and to collect landscape photographs of your trip, be sure to visit here during the evening before sunset and get your photos from the top of the watchtower. Be mindful when climbing the steps!
- The Tanjung Chali river cruise is available from Thursdays to Sundays and you can choose to go for a day or night trip as it is open until night time. The 4km boat journey takes roughly 40 minutes and you can get the tickets from the nearby counters.
