From the beginning, the gallery has already made an impression to every visitor with its architecture that reflects traditional heritage of Kedah at best, done by a local known as Muhammad bin Lebai. The building was formerly built as a state court in 1912 before it officially became state art gallery and opened to public in 1983.
Being one of the earliest modern government building in Alor Setar, this architectural landmark is home to international level artworks done by the youth and experienced artists in Kedah. Here in this gallery, you can find art displays such as paintings, photographs, musical instruments, handicrafts, calligraphy and also temporary exhibitions at certain times.
The three levels are filled with plenty of other exhibits such as antique weapons, jewellery, costumes and furnitures from the collection of Kedah’s royal heritage in the past. Some unique collections that you should explore here including early Chinese porcelain, an artefact from Bujang Valley and a golden tree which was grown as a tribute to the Thais.

If you plan to walk through Alor Setar heritage trails, there are four main attractions nearby. Head yourself first to Masjid Zahir with less than one minute walking and drop by at Kedah Royal Museum, another one minute journey from there by foot. Drop by for some pictures at Balai Nobat Alor Setar and lastly pay a visit to Istana Kuning (Yellow Palace). If your visit is during Malaysian football season, you can also catch the local football match at Darul Aman Stadium located only 2.5km away from this gallery.

If you are renting a car, just use the GPS to navigate Kedah State Art Gallery or Balai Seni Negeri Kedah. Easiest landmark would be footbal Darul Aman Stadium as it located only 2.5 km away from the stadium, along Jalan Bakar Bata. Otherwise, use a ride-sharing app or just get here by foot if you are taking the Alor Setar heritage trails.

- Despite being open everyday, this state art gallery is closed on two major Muslim festivals in Malaysia; during Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidiladha.
- On Fridays, the gallery is closed from 12pm - 2pm for Friday prayers.
- Get a guided tour if you’re visiting here in groups. Make early arrangements with the gallery as the tour is only by appointment.
- There are art and handicraft classes available here for your children to join the fun too. Enquire directly with the gallery if you are interested to join.
