The Kapitan Keling Mosque was named after Caudeer Mohuddeen, the head of the Indian Muslim community at that time (circa 1800). Since then the mosque has gone through many major renovations, the last major one being in 2003. The original mosque structure was a single-storey rectangular building with a sloping roof on all sides and surrounded by a stone bench. It was surrounded by shophouses, with access through a narrow gateway.
The Indo Moorish architecture is what sets this mosque apart from the other ones in Penang. After undergoing a major makeover in 1930s, its appearance has been radically altered. There are clear signs of Gothic, Moorish and Roman architecture which can be seen throughout the mosque. From its lofty white arches to the sparkling chandelier - which hangs in the main prayer hall.
