Penang Bridge was completed and opened in 1985 as the point of entry to Penang and as a solution to overcome crowded ferry terminals. Standing at 13.5km, Penang Bridge connects 50,000 commuters daily from Seberang Prai to George Town with a journey time of 10-15 minutes. However, due to the influx of tourists to the island, a second bridge was needed to cope with the rising traffic problem.
Being the longest bridge in South East Asia, Penang Bridge 2 (The Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge) was opened in 2014 to ease traffic woes on the island by 25% for the next 125 years. With a longer and curvier design than the original, Penang Bridge 2 stands at 24km connecting commuters from Batu Maung to Batu Kawan in 20 minutes.

The journey on both bridges are quite surreal. Especially if you are passing through in the morning or right before dusk. If the weather is just right, magnificent views of Penang and the mainland bathed in sunlight is an experience in itself. Anyone travelling across these two bridges will appreciate the marvellous feat of architecture and engineering to connect Pearl of the Orient with the rest of Malaysia.
