Also known as Kedah Peak, hiking up Mount Jerai or Gunung Jerai will be not be as easy as you think. The journey takes 5 to 6 hours depending on your pace and fitness level. The steep trails and rocky slopes can be challenging for those who are inexperienced hikers. As the weather can be a little misty and cold in the morning, it is best to prepare yourself with necessary outdoor gears.
Observe the path and if you are lucky enough, you may witness plenty of flora fauna species here along the way. The trail leads to a waterfall area called Alur Naga Waterfall. The legend says that there used to be a dragon living behind the waterfall and sometimes, the dragon takes a bath in the pool around it! Take a dip in the cold natural pool as it makes a good point to stop by before continuing your hike to the peak. As you reach the top, you can see a provided base camp. - If you plan to camp there overnight, do bring all your camping essentials and enough food. Consider bringing along thick clothes to survive the cold night at the peak.
- It is not advisable to hike alone.
- If you wish to camp there and go for night trekking, be sure that you do not walk around alone. Get someone to accompany you.
- Be extra careful as the hiking trails can be slippery especially when it rained the night before or in the morning.
- Driving up the top of Mount Jerai can also be quite challenging! The bends are steep and sharp so do ensure your car brakes are in good condition.
- Avoid hiking up the mountains at night.

- Fridays and Saturdays are considered as weekends in Kedah. It is one of the 3 states in Malaysia with different working hours.
- From Alor Setar, Mount Jerai is reachable within an hour and 15 minute drive. Take the North-South highway through Gurun exit.
- For day visitors, it is best to start your hike early in the morning before sunrise. Plan your journey ahead.
- If you wish to camp, you may start your hike in the afternoon. But plan your time so you will reach the base camp before it gets dark.
- Besides driving up to the top on your own, you can also get a local van service that charges RM10 for round trip.
- Another option is to cycle to the top. However, this is only suitable for experienced cyclists as it takes an average of 5 hours to reach the top from the foothill/
- On your way up, you will pass by a river that passes Mount Jerai known as Sungai Teroi Recreational Forest. Here, you can choose to explore more jungle trails if you have the time.
- There is also a Forestry Museum located along the way where you can stop by for a free visit.
