Also known as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, this place can be entered using 3 main gates. These carefully crafted holy area is populated by a large group of grey-haired and long-tailed macaques monkeys that will be in sight during your visit. Approximately, this sacred place receives around 10,000 visitors per month, making it one of the top tourist attractions in Ubud.
Located in the village of Padangtegal, there are three main temples inside this monkey forest which was built since the early 14th century. The main temple, Pura Dalem Agung is in the Southwest area and it is where the local Hindus worship their God. Located in the Northwest area is the second temple; Pura Beji, famous place for purification, and lastly in the same area is Pura Prajapati, located adjacent to an old cemetery.
This whole sacred forest area hosts 115 identified tree species. Your trip here will also be educational as you discover the nature that it has to offer. Some trees are believed to be holy and being used to craft as masks during special religious or spiritual ceremonies. Uniquely, these masks can only be worn inside this area according to the locals’ religious belief. It’s great to learn something new, and it’s best to get a guide to tell you some stories while you discover the grounds of this sacred sanctuary.

If you are from central bali such as Kuta, Seminyak or even Canggu, you can arrange for half-day trips to visit this place along with other attractions located in Gianyar district. From Ubud, head to Padangtegal village. It’s located nearby the centre of Ubud and also near to Ubud traditional art market. If you are in Ubud centre, grab a taxi to reach here. It will take you less than 10 minutes to get here depending on traffic.

- Ticketing services is open daily for walk-in visitors from 8.30 am to 5.30pm only.
- Keep your belongings safe. Any dangling objects such as sunglasses, necklaces and fancy clothes might attract the naughty monkeys to disturb you.
- It’s a good idea to keep your backpacks on the front to protect it from being attacked by the monkeys.
- Feeding monkeys might be fun but the monkeys can get a bit aggressive. It is advisable not to bring any food in.
- Remember to follow the Monkey Forest guidelines available at the place so you will not disturb or be disturbed by the monkeys.
- It is advisable to wear appropriate clothing as you enter this sacred forest because it is believed to be holy among the locals.
- Bring insect repellant too as you will be doing some walking in the jungle and it might come in handy.
- You can also catch cultural dance performances here. There are certain timings for the show and you need to pre-book.
