Into the cool central upland gardens, be relaxed with the superlative scenery of vast collection of tropical plants, rare specimens and wildlife in their natural habitat. Also known as Kebun Raya Bali, Bali Botanic Garden houses over 21,000 living specimens belonging to over 2,000 species of multifarious floras that can be found in Indonesia, Africa, America and other parts of the world. With an area of 157 hectares plant garden, the diverse habitat might leave you feeling a bit overwhelmed to explore.
The Garden houses 10,000 preserved plant specimens; from algae, flowering plants in its herbarium, hundreds of cactus collections and over 320 types of orchids. The rose garden boasts various collections of roses, from rusty-coloured to green chromatic tones which are definitely beautiful to explore. Here, you can also find other plants like birch trees that are still preserved in its original habitat in the forest, a picturesque fern garden, beautiful bamboo forest and rare species of carnivorous plants.
Be sure to make a stop at the Panca Yadnya Garden (Garden of Five Offerings) to see well-preserved plants that are used in ancient Hindu ceremonies. You can also observe the world's most comprehensive collection of begonias, as Bali Botanic Garden has 100 species to explore, including 3 endangered species unique to Bali. Bali Botanic Garden also is a great place for an educational trip as visitors can have a complete guided tour of the park area as well learning more about the species of flora and fauna that can be found here. - Bali Botanic Garden is open every day of the year except for Nyepi Day which is observed based on Balinese calendar.
- The gorgeous orchid area is often locked to foil flower fichers. Just ask any of the staff for it to be unlocked.
- The weather is hard to predict. Visitors are advised to always prepare an umbrella raincoat.
- On Sundays, you can enjoy enjoy some live music performances and indulge in food from the locals within a nearby area of this garden.
- Although most of the orchids bloom from March to June, there are always some that bloom year-round.
- Some orchid, cactus and begonia glasshouses may close earlier at 4.00 pm due to security reasons.
- For an extra IDR 10,500 you can drive your own car (no motorbikes) around the gardens.
- Get a guide to show you around and narrate the history of each monument or statues that you will pass by. The in-house guides here are well trained to explain the medicinal and ceremonial use of certain plants. Guide fees are negotiable, depending on your bargaining skills!
- Some plants are labelled with their botanical names. However, you can also get yourself a copy of the garden’s booklet for IDR 20,000. It is available at the entrance and you can use it for a self-guided tour.
