Unlike the famous Tegalang Rice Terrace, Covering over 600-hectare wide, Jatiluwih Rice Terrace is one of the largest paddy field area in Indonesia. Located in West Bali, it takes roughly 45 minutes from Ubud to reach here and it will definitely be worth your trip. Jatiluwih Rice Terrace is often visited for its landscape and travellers can experience walking through the rice paddy fields on a short trekking session.
Unlike the famous Tegalalang Rice Terrace, here is less crowded and it provides you with all the space you want for photographs. The unique location of Jatiluwih Rice Terrace offers Batukaru Mountain as its backdrop and a fairly cool ambiance due to its location at 700 meters above sea level.
Interestingly, here you can see the Balinese traditional irrigation system where they use to operate and maintain the rice terraces. It has been gazetted by UNESCO in 2012 as a cultural heritage site due to its unique farm traditional irrigation system known as Tri Hita Karana method.
There are around 14 different religious ceremonies held here every year to embrace the paddy terraces and celebrate local festivals. Some of the festivals include Ngerasakin, a ceremony to clean one’s impurities that are left behind when plowing rice fields that is usually celebrated in January. Another event, Ngekambuhin, is a ceremony to ask for salvation to God of the new rice growing which is in February.

To go to extraordinary sights, it will require some effort. Since Jatiluwih located in a rural area, the only way to get here is by private vehicle. You can either rent a car or motorcycle to get here. Finding transportation to rent is very easy in Bali and just worry less about it. It’s 45 minutes away from the center of Ubud and roughly a 2-hour drive from Kuta.

- Recommended time to visit Jatiluwih Rice Terrace is in the morning between 8am - 11am or in the afternoon between 3pm - 5pm. At this time of the day, you will get to see the local farming activities.
- The best month to visit this terrace is from March to April and October to December. It is when the harvest season is over and you will have higher chances to see the terraces and the paddy in full colours.
- There are always chances for rain, even during dry season in Bali. Be ready with raincoats or umbrella.
