Depending on which area you are travelling from, Ijen Crater can be accessible from the towns of Bondowoso in the East or Banyuwangi if you are in the East. It is located far from Surabaya city but a day trip is possible. - Do make some time to watch the workers mine and admire their hard work. Many empathise with their work situation but as much as you would like to purchase solid sulphur from them, please refrain from doing so as this is prohibited in your luggage when you board the plane.
- Although you do not need any professional training to hike to the crater, you do need a certain amount of stamina to be able to climb up so many flights of stairs and the steep trail can also pose as a challenge to those who are not use to these types of exercise.
- If you have breathing difficulties or have conditions such as asthma and extremely sensitive eyes, you are advised not to go too near to the crater as it will emit smoke and smell of sulphur which may cause health hazards.
- Do catch up on sleep whenever you can before travelling as some tours do set their travelling time in the wee hours in the morning and it might be dangerous to travel and hike for several hours when you are feeling tired and sleepy.
- One can also purchase gas mask at the local stalls at the base of the crater to cover the face from the smell of sulphur.
- Safety is often one of the main considerations when hiking up in steep and dark conditions. The journey to Ijen Crater often starts during the night.
- Be prepared to hike in cold conditions as the temperature drops at night. Bring thick clothings and wear shoes with a good grip.
