Peranakan means locally born in Malay. As Chinese traders settle down with local women in Southeast Asia, a new community was formed. Over the years and spanning generations, the Peranakan community grew and meshed into the fabric of multi-ethnic Singapore, as well as neighbouring Southeast Asia communities such as Malacca and Penang in Malaysia.
The Peranakan Museum in Singapore has gone through its fair share of tribulations and triumphs to finally emerge as a unique, one-of-a-kind majestic Peranakan museum that it is today. Housed in the Old Tai Nan School building at Armenian Street, it was once an extended wing to the artefact collection of the Asian Civilisations Museum. The decision to dedicate the space to Peranakan culture resulted in the curation of Peranakan traditional artefacts and wares.
Today, it houses the world’s finest collection of Peranakan artefacts in various galleries. Expect to find an eclectic mix of Peranakan jewellery, household wares, textiles and many more! Besides that, the museum also promises an inclusive experience with interactive and multimedia exhibits. Immerse in Peranakan culture and discover interesting and elaborate traditions such as the elaborate 12-day Peranakan wedding. Or explore how the Peranakan culture has evolved throughout the years and its impact towards modern Peranakans.
Visitors are highly recommended to participate in the free guided tour. Headed by passionate and friendly volunteers, the 1-hour tour will expose visitors to the elaborate traditions and culture of the Peranakan community. The tours are conducted in 4 different languages; English, Mandarin, Japanese and French. Expect an enlightening experience with detailed explanations of the exhibits and artefacts!
