Helix Bridge is the longest pedestrian bridge in Singapore. Inspired by the DNA helix structure, it is the world’s first curved double helix bridge. Initially planned for a fishnet design to reflect Singapore’s past as a fishing village, the design was changed to the double helix structure to reflect life and continuity, renewal and growth. Its architecture is exquisite yet strong, with its special duplex stainless steel structure capable of supporting up to 16,000 people at a time.
Besides its graceful aesthetic that adds to the grandeur of the Marina Bay Sands atmosphere, the Helix Bridge also serves an important function. It connects Marina Centre with the Bayfront Area, providing quick access to Marina Bay Sands for pedestrians coming from the Esplanade and City Hall area. The city’s commitment to art is reflected with the bridge being an outdoor gallery to visitors of Singapore. The bridge is home to artwork by local youths. Before the bridge’s opening, a competition was held for youths to incorporate their artworks into the bridge. The resulting designs were the outcome of 8 winners collaborating with local artists to finalise their designs for display.
Witness boats passing through Marina Bay and Marina Channel under the Helix Bridge, as you bask in the bay view’s beauty from five viewing pods extended from the bridge. Take time to appreciate the amazing detailed artwork created by local youths and artists accompanied with a soft breeze from the bay. At night, see the bridge come to live with lights strategically placed on the bridge, while enjoying the light and water show across the bay. Interestingly, the light changes according to different events and celebrations!
