If you happen to visit Johor Bahru, make some time to drop by one of the oldest temples here which is known as the Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple. Do not be fooled by the size of this small temple as it is home to treasured history and inspiring stories dated back when it was built in the 19th century. Aside from that, it also makes a nice place for photography and a good opportunity to gain an in depth understanding about the Chinese culture in the beginning of their days in Johor.
The temple is known to be a symbol of unity among five Chinese subgroups in Malaysia, namely the Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka, Hainan and Cantonese. As you enter the grounds of this temple, you will be amazed with its classic Chinese architecture and the notable giant Tien Gong incense pot placed at the entrance.
To make the most of your trip here, you should come during the Chingay Festival as there would be a parade of the deities which takes place annually around Chinese New Year time in February. The road will be busy and the celebration lasts for four days as all the deities will end their parade around Johor Bahru town on the last day. The lively ambiance will be accompanied by traditional musical instruments like the gongs and drums, a lion dance performance and parade from fellow devotees.
