Taman Sari Water Castle was once a royal garden served as a workshop, meditation center and even a political hiding place. This unique escape which was built earlier for the royal family has its own appeal and story alongside it's combination of eastern and western-influenced architecture. The ample grounds are edged with well-kept gardens, bright coloured flowers and lush foliage. A tiny artificial lake, open pools and bathing complex are just among the features of this castle that are open for tourists to explore.
The buildings on the site are all connected via a network of corridors that descends into the Tagut system which are underwater passageways with some that are still accessible to visitors.A visit to Taman Sari Water Castle will surely let you admire the beauty of this garden chateau, which was a perfect representation of Yogyakarta’s Javanese royalty a few hundred years ago. Located southwest of the Kraton Palace Yogyakarta, the magnificent Taman Sari Water Castle was once served as a pleasure park for the palace, equipped with pools and waterways for the Sultan and his entourage.
Elaborate Portuguese architecture enhanced the 12,600 acre space including series of artificial lakes, pools and water gardens, as well as a collection of 59 buildings in total. Since 1995 the Yogyakarta Palace Complex including Taman Sari is listed as a tentative World Heritage Site.
There are three different pools in Umbul Pasiraman area, namely Umbul Binangun, Umbul Muncar and Blumbang Kuras which are different areas for the daughters of Sultan and his potential wives to bathe. The complex was damaged first during Diponegoro’s Java War and also due to an earthquake in 1865. While much of what you see today lies in ruins, the bathing pools have been restored, the tunnels and underground mosque are still being preserved which are quite special.
