Siung Beach is part of the series of beaches surrounding Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Situated in Tepus District which is nearly 70 km from central Yogyakarta, you can get here on a 2-hour journey and plan for a day trip. The beach offers challenging climbing tracks, nature trails, and a breathtaking scenery of the ocean for its visitors. Not just locals, but many foreign climbers also frequent the place to conquer the steep rocky hills in Siung Beach.
Your climb will be at Siung Rock, a limestone cliff formation located in Siung Beach. There are over 250 climbing routes available here, with various grades ranging from ramps to extreme (5.9 - 5.13), where you can choose based on your level. Climbing routes are separated at several cliffs which marked as letter ‘A’ until ‘K’, and connected by a path from one cliff to the rest. The last block (K), is a special cliff formation for artificial climbing.
Most routes are created from year 2000 to 2003 and it’s safe to say that Siung Beach rock climbing experience will be familiar to them. The existence of cloves coast is where explorers can find a beach to visit. Climbing lanes are formed naturally due to a long process of erosion by a massive rock sea water for hundreds of years. These corals form a cluster of tracks that can be climbed, of course, with adequate equipment and supplies.
The pathways are named and equipped with a hanger bolt. Each block on the 11-piece cloves (A to K) has a height ranging from 5-30 metres. Each block has more than two climbing lanes and each has its own difficulty level. - Listen to the safety briefing carefully before you start climbing. Ensure your safety gear and equipments are completely secured.
- Prepare a mini first-aid kit in your ‘pack, because some of the cliffs are sharp and you may get hurt. It’s best to be careful and watch your steps while climbing.
- Children below 16 are not encouraged to try this activity, unless they are already experienced and with an adult’s supervision.
- Choose your routes carefully. Consider your fitness level, skills, and climbing experience. Some routes here are strenuous.

- There is an entrance fee of IDR 10,000 per person to Siung Beach. You can also find a parking space for motorcycles and cars.
- Bringing your own climbing equipment and safety gears such as harnesses, helmets, ropes, or carabiners will save you more. Otherwise, you might have to rent them here.
- The best time to visit here is on a day trip and start in the morning. Reach here by 9.00 am to begin your climb as it will take at least 3 hours depending on the routes chosen.
- Siung Beach is the only one beach that is safe to snorkel in. Other beaches have stronger currents and bigger waves, which are not suitable for snorkeling. Try experiencing this if you have the time too!
- There is a camping area really close to the beach and you can spend the night in the outdoors. If you are planning to camp there, bring along outdoor equipments and essentials that you might need.
- There are restrooms nearby. You can also find a traditional store for you to buy some drinks or snacks.
- After playing at the shoreline, you can hike to the steep karst cliffs at the west of the beach. These cliffs are where the rock climbers do their thing!
- In the middle of the cliffs, there is space that can be used as camping grounds too. People usually set a campfire here if they tend to stay late.
- From top of the cliffs at the peak, you can see Siung Beach entirely from one end to another. It is such a beautiful view up there and every climber will surely be satisfied!
