Entering the museum area of Ullen Sentalu in Kaliurang, Yogyakarta, you will be transported to the ancient Javanese Kingdom through buildings which reflect the grandeur of the Mataram dynasty during their glorious days here. The Mataram dynasty is known to be the most powerful dynasty in Central Java in medieval times. It’s really captivating to learn the Javanese cultural history and arts so feel free to take the time to explore the whole area by yourself!
The museum consists of four different rooms. Be greeted at ‘Ruang Selamat Datang’ (the guest reception) as you explore the spaces and also stop by ‘Ruang Seni Tari dan Gamelan’ which displays several sets of traditional dance and musical instruments (gamelan) as well as an array of traditional dance paintings. Seeing the beautifully manicured gardens surrounding Ullen Sentalu Museum adds to the magical feel.
Before ending the tour, you will visit a place known as ‘Bale Nitik Rengganis’ for a short break, where we you will be served traditional herbs. Taste the Ratu Mas Jamu, a concoction made from a secret recipe of seven herbs, created by the empress to Sultan Pakubuwono X. This herbal drink is believed to preserve one’s youth and beauty. You will then subsequently led to the final room, the Bride and Groom room, where your guide will explain in great detail the different costumes and traditions of Yogyakarta and Solo’s wedding cultures.

The easiest way is to rent a car so you can explore the Kaliurang area or other places around Yogyakarta for about 12 hours. A rental will usually cost around IDR 600,000. You can use a taxi, but it is better to ask the taxi driver to wait for you since it is a bit hard to find a taxi from Ullen Sentalu Museum.Or, ask your hotel if they can provide other transportation services.

- One of the most important thing you should know is that you are not allowed to take pictures in the museum. There are some selected places in the area, which you can capture them, but photographs are prohibited in general.
- Guided tour is available at Ullen Sentalu Museum and takes around 50 minutes.
- Sometimes, they will gather at least 25 people to be in a group before assigning you a guide. You might have to wait for at least half an hour during non-peak periods before starting the tour.
- Occasionally, the museum also hosts exhibitions and cultural events that are open to public. Be sure to check our their official website to find more updates before planning your visit.
- Entrance fee is different for locals and tourists. For locals, it is priced at IDR 15,000 per child and IDR 30,000 per adult. Tourists will be charged at IDR 30,000 per child and IDR 50,000 per adult.
