Being the highest mountain in the Cameron Highlands region and the 15th highest in Malaysia, Mount Irau is a popular spot for hikers and thrill seekers eager to hit the 2110m elevation! It’s also regarded as a very challenging hike as you have to go through dense jungle and a very muddy trail. Don’t let the 100 metre elevation change fool you as the trip to the summit takes about 8 hours from start to finish!
It’s all worth it in the end as the hike takes you through the cold and relaxing boardwalk section till you reach the muddy trail filled with numerous tree roots. You’ll also need your hands to help you climb up at certain points as Mount Irau is a serious hike. The views during the hike, especially through the mossy forest coupled with the mist will leave you feeling as if you’ve been transported through a fairyland instead of the jungle.

- If you do not want to risk your hiking shoes, another option is purchasing the locally made rubber shoes (costs around RM 5 - RM 10 for a pair) called ‘Adidas Kampung’ which fares well on the muddy ground. You can find them in the local hardware shops.
- Be advised that there isn’t a scenic view at the peak of Mount Irau. However, your journey there will definitely be accompanied with interesting flora and fauna which also makes a great opportunity for photography.
- Start early! It’s easy to underestimate the elevation change but the hike will take you about 8 hours from start to finish, and you don’t want to hike down in the darkness.
- Be wary of local scalpers trying to sell you a tour guide’s services or expensive tour package. The trail is pretty clear and can be independently hiked.
- There are no facilities provided on the beginning of your trail until the end. You should carry everything you need in your backpack.
