You won’t miss Ling Sen Tong as your eyes will definitely be attracted by the brightly painted pagoda. You’re greeted by two dragons that line up the entrance into the temple where you enter the garden that’s filled with multiple statues from Chinese mythology. The famous ones are the ones depicting the story of Journey To The West.
In the two-storey high temple, you can enter the prayer chamber and offer joss stick burnings for prayer, where you’ll see the ceiling charred with black from the smoke of previous devotees. You’ll have no problem spending a good deal of time here taking photos of children and the statues before moving on to the other nearby cave temples.

The Ling Sen Tong is one of the smaller temples of the three located in the area. The other two are called Nam Thean Tong and Sam Poh Tong. They are all located within walking distance of each other and the other two temples have more prominent caves as they have stalagmites and stalactites that depict certain gods and goddesses in the Taoist/Buddhist religion.

Outside the temple entrance, there are usually a few shops selling pomelos, which Ipoh town is famous for. Although a little expensive as they’re selling to tourists, you could try to bargain the prices if you’re interested to bite into the sweet pomelos.

Bus travel to the temple would be the cheapest option. You can take the Perak Transit bus with the route #66 and stop at the Gunung Rapat bus stop (ask the bus driver if you’re unsure where to get off). From the bus stop, the pagodas are clearly visible and you can make your way to the temple’s entrance.
If you would rather travel by car, any taxi in town can get you the temple entrance or you could also use the ridesharing services such as Uber or GRAB just by typing ‘Ling Sen Tong’.

Insiders’ tips
- It’s best to go during weekdays where there aren’t as many people so you can take as much time as you want to explore the temple grounds.
- Dress decently as you are entering a religious area.
- Try lighting a joss stick or donating money to the temple for a small red packet!
- Some of the staircases only have handrails on one side: take extra care with small children when going up or down.
- The cave area is relatively small here but if you want to see more of the cave temples just walk up the road a little to the Nam Thean Tong and Sam Poh Tong temples.
- If you wish to visit the two nearby cave temples as well, it would take you around 3 - 4 hours for all of them.
