Located 15 minutes away from the nearest town of Gopeng, Gua Tempurung is an all natural limestone cave that experts estimate to be between 250-400 million years old. The cave system runs for 4.5km, but only 1.9 km is open to the public for tours. There is also a 1.6km long river running through the cave. It has 5 unique domes shaped like coconut husks, hence the name ‘tempurung’ (a Malay word for coconut husk).
Historically, the caves were once used as a hideout location for communist forces during the Malayan Emergency. Since the 90’s, it has been converted to a fully fledged ‘show cave’ for tourists to visit and explore with the addition of handrails, concrete steps and spotlights to showcase the beautiful stalactites and naturally occurring rock formations in Gua Tempurung.

You can hire a taxi or use a ride sharing service such as Uber or GRAB to drive up to Kellie’s Castle, which is located about 25 minutes away from Gua Tempurung. The castle, which first started construction in 1915, draws architectural influence from Scottish, Tamilvanan and Moorish designs. Sadly, it was never officially finished and the state government now takes care of the building and has made it into a popular attraction for locals and foreign tourists.

There is a souvenir shop outside the cave entrance where you will be spoilt for choice with an assortment of goodies. Otherwise, a set of photos during your trip here would be more than enough!
