Known as a paradise for birdwatchers, Taman Negara is blessed to have upwards of 750 resident species and migratory birds in its vicinity. Over a third of bird species can be found here in Malaysia’s tropical rainforests. As of 2017, a total of 173 species of birds can be found here in Taman Negara.
There are many trails in the park that lead you along to have some excellent views of the birds. These include the Bukit Teresek trail, Kumbang Hide trail, Lembah Enggang trail and Ngeram trail. You also get to see other creatures such as snakes and maybe even tapir along the way!
The swamp loop trail is also another excellent area to birdwatch for the beginner as it is boarded and can be easily accessed. With patience, silent footsteps and an eager attitude, you can have a whole day of fun watching the various birds in Taman Negara.

There are limited facilities for birdwatching in Taman Negara, which means you might need to bring your own equipments for this activity. You might find a few platforms in the high trees. But not to worry as there is a large number of birds here that you can spot many even from ground level!

- Register yourself with the Park Rangers office before heading off to the forest so they know to look for you if you go missing.
- Rainy weather in the forest can be dangerous and potentially make you lost if you are not experienced. If clouds are looming, reschedule for another day.
- Keep a safe distance from other wildlife and do not provoke them.
- Be careful when walking while using your binoculars as to not trip over and injure yourself.

- A pair of binoculars with 7x magnification is sufficient for birdwatching in Taman Negara.

- The best time for this activity is before 7am or in the late afternoon where you will get to see most of the rare bird sightings!
