Berkelah Falls was named after ‘ikan kelah’ a species of fish that was once thought to be in abundance in the river but the population has recently declined due to loss of habitat. The waterfall has 7 tiers, each with its unique waterfall and a pool at the base, with the highest tier at a height of 50 metres.
There are campsites at the first tier where many tourists camp overnight. Upgraded roads leading to the falls have also led to an increase of people visiting the area. Despite that, the general cleanliness of the area and quality of the pools is perfect for swimming and having fun. As you venture towards the 7th tier, you’ll encounter one waterfall after another and even Olympic sized pools with depths reaching 5-10 metres!

Insiders’ tips
Insiders’ tips
- Be extra careful on the hike to the upper tier waterfalls after the campsites as it is easy to slip and fall into the river. Watch your step, even on the dry rocks.
- The depth of some of the pools can reach up to 10m. The water is also cold and has a strong current. Therefore, if you’re not a strong swimmer or are bringing kids along, it’s best to have a lifejacket on them.
- From the starting point of the trail, the hike up to designated campsite where most visitors would camp here would take roughly 3-4 hours depending on your hiking skills.
- If you plan to camp here, be sure to bring all the needed camping facilities, outdoor gears and sufficient amount of food and drinks for you to survive the night.
- Even if you don’t plan to camp here, it is best to come early in the morning, recommended around 8am so you can reach the tiers before noon and freely enjoy your time here. This way, you don’t have to rush your hike down before it gets dark
