What to expect?
What to expect?
Klias Wetlands is part of a protected mangrove forest reserve located about 2-2.5 hours south of Kota Kinabalu by car. During this journey, you can relax and enjoy a scenic view of the Sabah countryside and rural villages. Once you have arrived at the wetlands, rest at the lounge area with some beverages and snacks while awaiting your boat.
The cruise starts at 2-3pm as the animals are active in the evening as they stay on the ground of the forest to avoid the heat from the afternoon sun. To reach the sighting area, the boat takes about 1.5 hours. Your first sight will most probably be the infamous proboscis monkey, along with macaques, the silver langur and other tree dwellers. Besides the monkeys, you can spot Kingfishers, eagles, monitor lizards and even estuarine crocodiles!
The fresh air is relaxing and you can enjoy the sounds of the forest while snapping away with your camera. Once the wetlands tour is done, you’ll return to the main lounge area around night time and enjoy a sumptuous Malaysian buffet dinner (depending on your tour operator). The highlight of the nocturnal show are the fireflies who come out in the thousands during the pitch darkness and put on a spectacular show for you!
