The Kawang Forest Reserve is located approximately 24km away from Kota Kinabalu city and is to a certain extent, not well known to tourists. As the reserve doesn’t see that many people throughout the year, you get to experience the rainforest in all its glory. The reserve is home to the Tanaki Waterfall which supplies gravity water to the local population in the area.
A trek through this dense forest teaches you invaluable lessons about traversing through a jungle environment and maybe a few new skills too! Its peaceful atmosphere accompanied by the various sounds of wildlife in their natural habitat and the splashing sounds of river water against the rocks will definitely leave you a lasting impression on this underrated forest reserve.
While Kawang is a great place for camping and wildlife spotting too, one should also note that it has its own cave system, filled with hundreds of bats! The beauty of this jungle will captivate you and a trek through it is the best way to experience what it’s like.
