The sea gypsies or Bajau Laut are exceptional free divers. They are nomadic fishing community who live on boathouses and mainly work as fishermen. What's special about these sea gypsies is that they can hold their breath for several minutes diving well over 20 metres as they hunt for fish, lobsters and sea cucumbers!Apart from being excellent at fishing and diving, they are also skilled at constructing pile houses and boats called lepa. Beautifully decorated, technicolour lepa boats are also featured in the popular Regatta Lepa festival which takes place annually.
