At 2000m above sea level, Lake Segara Anak is the highest caldera lake with an active volcano in the world. Immortalized on the 10,000 Rupiah note, the crater lake whose mystifyingly blue colour gives the name of Segara Anak which means Child of the Sea. It is part of the great Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok. Also locally known as Danau Segara Anak, it is a 200m deep lake formed by a huge eruption years ago. There is also an active volcano at the center of the lake. Part of the lake flows down a steep ravine forming one large waterfall and several smaller ones.
From the crater’s rim, Lake Segara Anak is a sharp descent of about 600 meters. The trek to the rim is a challenging climb up steep terrain and high cliffs, but the exhaustion is well rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the sun setting over Mount Rinjani. You will also get the chance to take a refreshing dip in the soothing warm water of the lake to relieve your body and muscle aches.
By taking the Sembalun Lawang route from Rinjani Trek Center in the village, rolling hills and amazing scenery will help you to ease the tiredness, unlike the enclosed tropical rainforest of Senaru route. To reach Lake Segara Anak, make a descent of about 600m down to shores of the crater lake and you will reach an area where you can set your tent to camp and bath in the hot waters. To get to Lake Segara Anak, you will need to join an outdoor hiking trip to Mount Rinjani. It is easy to get to Rinjani Park through private and public transportation as it is a major attraction in Lombok. Rental cars, bikes and buses are available to the park from central Lombok which will roughly take a journey of 3-hour drive.

- To get to Lake Segara Anak, you can choose to take the Senaru or Sembalun Lawang route.
- Descent to the lake can be slippery when weather is dry, as scree tends to give way under and savannah grasslands fades away the humidity from the tropical rainforest begins to set in.
- Request for guides to cut out a wooden trekking pole if you did not bring a trekking pole with you. It will be extremely handy during the descent, especially when your legs are aching from the strenuous climb.
- Be aware of the symptoms and treatment of altitude sickness as you hike up to Rinjani Mountain to reach the lake. It is very cold up on the summit (4 to 5°C). Therefore, warm windproof clothes are a must.
- Due to the very active volcano, always be aware of the current assessment of eruptive activity. It is worth to keep an eye on sources like the Smithsonian Institute's weekly, Volcanic Activity Report and local Indonesian media.
- Ensure that your guide is experienced, properly equipped and provisioned.
