Climbing Mount Rinjani can be both fun and challenging, depending on how many days you are planning to spend on trekking and which trail you are taking. There are two routes with different trekking duration. If you plan to reach the summit within 2 days and spend a night there, you may choose to start your climbing via Sembalun. Sembalun comes with easier climbing where the routes are mostly flat, but the setback is your trekking path will be exposed to sunlight at all times.
If your trekking starts from Senaru; which is the other side of the mountain, it gives more fun and beautiful view for you to explored. This route is steeper and the non-stop climbing will take 3 days and 2 nights for you to reach the summit. The bright side is, going through Senaru forest’s shaded route could be more comforting for hikers. It is highly recommended to start your trek early in the morning and if possible, choose to camp there for a night.
Basically, you will start your expedition from the entrance of Mount Rinjani Park. Prior reaching to the entrance, there are two stunning waterfalls where you can visit namely the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfall. Most visitors tend to stop by Sendang Gile Waterfall for a quick dip as it is located closer to the entrance.
The first day of climbing could take around 10 hours to reach the first Mount Rinjani’s campsite, Sembalun crater rim at 2,639 meters above the sea level. Prior reaching to the campsite, there will be few stops where you can rest your legs and have a drink. Day 2 will be more challenging as you will continue your climbing at 3 am to head to Mount Rinjani’s summit. You will climb for another 3 more hours before reaching the beautiful summit of Mount Rinjani and witness a mesmerizing sunrise view. From the summit, you can also see Mount Agung of Bali and three best known Gili Islands which are Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and GIli Air. After the summit, you will trek back to the other side of crater rim, Plawangan Senaru to set up your camp. On the third day, you will trek down to Senaru as early as 7.00 am and you will reach at around 3.00 pm.
