Approximately 24km away from Kuching, the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre was established in 1975 as a wildlife rehabilitation centre with over 740 hectares of protected forest reserves, caring for nearly 1,000 endangered mammals, birds and reptiles from various species. There are also short nature trails that go inside the jungle where you can see the different types of trees and flora in the rainforest.
Aside from other wildlife species that you get to meet here, the orangutan rehabilitation programme is the major highlight and one of the reasons Semenggoh Wildlife Centre became famous. The orangutan feeding sessions are done two times a day from 9am - 10pm and 3pm - 3.30pm where you venture into the forest towards the feeding area and get to witness them up close from a visitor's’ platform. Typical sights include a mother and her young ones as well as the alpha orangutans that weigh up to 120lbs!

Safety tips
Safety tips
- The Semenggoh Wildlife Reserve isn’t a petting zoo so visitors should never touch, hold, feed or play with the orangutans as they are being prepped to live in the wild without human assistance.
- Make sure you’re within the visitor’s platform at all times and don’t try to get too near to the orangutans enclosure.
- The orangutans might sometimes wander into the visitors centre to look at the people and satisfy their curiosity. Keep a distance of at least 6 metres from them as some of them may feel threatened and try to attack you if you shy too closely. This has happened a few times in the past and the reserve’s wardens have enough scars to prove it.
Insiders’ tips
Insiders’ tips
- Take note that feeding times for the orangutans are specifically at 9am and 3pm and held at the feeding area in the centre.
- Be prepared for the possibility that you might not see any orangutans at all. It’s a good thing as they are less dependent on the human feedings. However, this is only a remote possibility as at least a few orangutans come for the morning feeding sessions.
- You are not allowed to pick or collect any plants or fauna species in Semenggoh Nature Reserve as it is prohibited to do so in a protected area.
- Other than orangutans, the reserve is also a great place to go birdwatching so do bring along your camera!
- If you are going with a group of 5 people or less, you can hire a guide to show you around the wildlife centre for RM40.
- Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is a part of Semenggoh Nature Reserve which also houses the Botanical Research Centre. Once you’re done visiting the wildlife centre, make your way to the ethnobotanical gardens, wild fruit orchards or go on the nature trails to see other variety of gardens for an approximately 5 - 30 minutes of trekking.
