Indigenous to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, orangutans are currently classified as Critically Endangered by World Wildlife Fund. Its population has been cut in half over the past 50-60 years ago due to human activities such as poaching and irresponsible deforestation. It will be an interesting experience for wildlife and animal lovers to explore the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center as visitors can witness endangered species to see how they are being taken care of and treated.
The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is one of the first official projects to combat this by taking in these unfortunate orangutans and caring for them till they are ready to be released back into the wild. For visitors here, the highlight is the boardwalk section that leads to the feeding platform, where you can witness the orangutans in their natural habitat. Other than that, you can also see other wildlife species such as adorable Bornean sun bears, Sumatran rhinos and gibbons.
A relatively new nursery section has also opened in this centre, where one can view the younger orangutans learning to play and practice critical skills such as swinging on a large climbing frame. Once ready, orangutans which are deemed independent by their caretakers will eventually be inserted into the greater wild orangutan population in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve.
