Located deep in the centre of the mangrove forests of Kampung Senawang in Labuk Bay, a local palm oil plantation owner discovered that the land he had purchased also had proboscis monkeys dwelling in them. Thus, the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary was created. It is a unique area as proboscis monkeys are only found in Borneo, and that too in specific areas.
There are hundreds of monkeys here and they are attracted to the viewing areas with food provided by the sanctuary staff. There are two huge observation platforms called A and B. The silverleaf monkey is known to visit the B platform at times too along with the Oriental Pie hornbills! With 2 feeding sessions at the 2 platforms throughout the day, the monkeys can be seen frequently and up close as well. It makes a great time for photography opportunities too.
The layout of the sanctuary allows for close contact between you and the monkeys as well. A small camera fee coupled with affordable entrance fees and great views of the wildlife is what makes Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary a great place to visit. Nearby the sanctuary is the Nipah Lodge, with chalets and dormitories should you wish to spend the night.
