What to expect?
A mere 15km away from the shores of Sandakan, Lankayan Island is part of the Sugud Island Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA). As the region is protected, you’ll find nothing but thriving marine life and healthy corals here. Also, do expect to see Malaysian Naval Vessels on the lookout for dive boats in various locations around the island and armed soldiers to welcome you here at the jetty.
The dive sites at Lankayan are only 2-15 minutes away by speedboat from each other and include reefs and several wrecks. Visibility is great for diving and the shallow reefs provide a good experience for snorkelling as well. Lankayan is also a good place if you’re looking for the world’s biggest fish: the whale shark as it is known to circle the waters around the island. Other marine life you get to witness here include harmless reef sharks, giant clams, spider crabs, and seahorses
Green and hawksbill sea turtles are also aplenty here as the island serves as a key location for turtles looking for a place to nest in the Sulu Sea. At night you can walk along the beaches and even witness the turtles during the nesting process. Lankayan Island practices eco friendly tourism, where human impact is limited so as to preserve the environment and natural surroundings here.
