House of Sampoerna is a museum which tells the story of the biggest tobacco company in Indonesia. One will get to know about this company in detail and do not worry as there are also explanations available in English. The concept of this museum is really interesting as visitors get to turn back time, while learning about history and taking pleasure in its stunning setting of the factory grounds and the museum displays.
House of Sampoerna has been voted the country’s best museum and has been consistently being named Surabaya’s top 10 museums to visit since year 2013. Here, visitors will get to learn about how the company was founded, how they have expanded to one of the largest cigarette factory in Indonesia and see first hand on how the cigarettes or kretek as the locals call it were made using hand.

There is even a small bar located there to those who wants a drink or two. While you are dining at the cafe there, do also take some time to enjoy the unique decorations that are displayed there as most decors are antique furnitures being left down by the owner as the museum is a private museum.

There are free shuttle buses that takes travellers to House of Sampoerna which also tours the North of Surabaya area. Tourists can learn more about the history of Surabaya and get more information about other interesting places to visit in Surabaya. - Although there are no hands-on activities to be done there, one gets to see how the workers there fill up the cigarettes in a traditional way at the factory. However, no photos are allowed to please do comply with their rules there.
- If possible, do try to visit the museum in between Monday to Saturday, 9AM to 11AM as you will get to see the factory working on these days and time. The factory does not work on Sundays so it would be best to be able to go there when the factory is working to have a more interesting experience there.
- There are many guides at the museum that are really knowledgeable in Surabaya’s history. If you do not know where else to do after your tour at the museum, do not feel shy to ask some of the lovely museum guides there, they will be more than happy to give you some pointers.
- There will also be exhibits that are not related to Sampoerna being displayed from time to time so visitors can learn more about Surabaya’s other culture as well when they visit the museum.
- Besides all these, do also bring along your identification card or passport just in case any of the staffs need to check on them while you are there.
- Some of the peak times to visit this museum is around 12PM to 3PM so if you are not keen on crowds, you might want to visit the museum early in the morning or after 4PM.
