The Pagaruyung Palace is a magnificent socio-historical attraction near Padang to visit as its majestic and traditional Minangkabau architecture designed building will draw you in awe. Although most parts of the palace has been demolished due to war and fire, as well as being rebuilt for 3 times, the government still managed to preserve many of its traditional essences that one can see at the palace today.
Those who appreciates fine art architecture will love it here as there are also intricate carvings being included into its designs as part of the traditional Minangkabau culture. The design of the whole building is probably one of the most unique features of Pagaruyung Palace or also known as Istana Baso among locals. It is a traditional Minangkabau Rumah Gadang with a multi-storey structure and it is a larger version of the Rumah Gadang as compared to the normal sized ones.
Restoration of Pagaruyung Palace took years to complete and what one sees now, is a modern structure but with very traditional elements included into its design. 3-storeys with 72 pillars and also the ‘gonjong’ as locals call it, is a horn like curved roof that is made out of 62 tonnes of palm fibers are all carefully mimicked after the original version of the palace. To explore the vibrant Minangkabau culture unique to Padang, visit the humble Pariangan Village where you will also see an amazing scenery. On your way there, stop by a local coffee shop known as Kopi Kiniko to buy local coffee as souvenirs as well as enjoy some coffee time overlooking a beautiful valley. Pagaruyung Palace is one of the many must visit spots in Batusangkar town, roughly 3 hours journey from Padang by land. Get a private tour package to Bukittinggi from Padang and you could request to include this attraction in your itinerary. If you are going there on your own, there should be no problem locating this landmark. It is sited just about 5 km away from the Batusangkar city centre so you can either travel there via public transportation such as the bus, or choose to rent a transportation from Padang city center.

- When you are there, do not forget to also rent their traditional costume and take a picture as remembrance. Fees are not very costly so if you have the time, do have some of your picture take wearing these traditional outfit.
- If you are planning to visit the palace around noon time, it might get a little hot as there are not many trees there so there would not be a lot of shades available there.
- Do expect crowds if you are visiting during the school holidays in Indonesia as the palace is also a popular spot for school field trips. So, do not be surprised if you see little children in uniforms walking around the palace during these times.
- Should you plan to go on a private tour package, be sure that you enquire at a licensed tour operator to avoid getting scammed.
- If you are travelling on a tight budget, it is recommended to rent a transportation from the city of Padang to get to Batusangkar or Bukittinggi area.
