- It is always best to notify your friends or just about anyone to let them know of your whereabouts just in case there are any emergencies.
- If this is your first time surfing, you can also opt to attend a surfing camp available at some of the local tour agencies to better equip yourself with some knowledge before you venture out into the sea.

- Some of the best months to go surfing at Mentawai will be from April to October where the waves are bigger and more consistent.
- Do take note if you are planning a visit during the month of November to March as these are considered low seasons there. Winds are light and there will hardly be any charters operating and most resorts will also be closed during this period of time.
- Although your trip or itinerary might be planned out nicely with you and your local guide, there can still be changes to your surfing trip as each trip depends mainly on the weather and also the wind and waves condition.
- There are many local tour agencies providing surfing packages plus accomodations in Mentawai, so it is best to do some homework in advance and see which package suits your liking the most before you book your trip.
- As it is located on the west coast of Sumatra, Padang is a gateway to Mentawai Islands. There are ferry and boat charter services available to get there. A return day trip is not possible so you could consider finding a place to stay for a night or two instead as there are plenty of options on all the islands there.
