The Mulu region in Sarawak is home to some of the finest caves located in the vicinity of Gunung Mulu National Park. It is famous for being host to one of the longest cave passages in the world as well as the largest cave chamber.
The Deer Cave welcomes you with the squeaking of insects and a staggering 3 million bats rustling around on the cave’s ceiling. For a walking distance of 3.8km, discover your way through lush forests and an ancient riverbed in the caves. There, you can many ancient carving features that shaped the cave from thousands of years ago. Tours here are also timed with the bat exodus, where visitors will be able to see them exit the cave in millions of groups as they forage for food.
Other caves in Mulu take you on an exciting river adventure as well. To discover the Wind Caves, one has to traverse the Melinau River via longboat to reach the entrance. Stalactites and stalagmites here are metres long and accompany the geographically unique rock formations.
Consider visiting the nearby Clearwater Cave. This cave has its own subterranean river! Right outside of the Clearwater Cave lies a serene sandy pool where you can have a dip in the crystal clear waters that flow from this river.

- Follow the instructions of your guide at all times during the tour.
- Watch your footing in the darkness of the caves as some rocks may be slippery and cause you to fall.
- Mind your head while caving throughout the narrow sections.
- Careful when touching the walls and rocks as you can get a nasty cut.
- Wear quality shoes or rubber boots that are non-slippery to ensure maximum safety and comfort.

- You need to have headlamps or your own torches otherwise you may be rejected from the tour or placed in a different time slot.
- Keep your eyes and ears open and you may even spot some insects (or animals) that are hiding or well camouflaged.
